The White House released a lengthy report Wednesday on artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential impact on multiple industries.
Understanding and pinpointing possibly harmful factors that underline the rapid evolution of AI will help prepare future government bodies, businesses, and users for the broad deployment of AI.
The report, titled “Preparing For The Future Of Artificial Intelligence,” highlighted four key areas of AI and offered recommendations for each:
- AI and regulation: Regulatory procedures can provide a sense of accountability and protect user data. Nevertheless, it’s important that these regulations do not inhibit innovation within the space. The report recommends that agencies draw on technical experts at the senior level when setting regulatory policies to provide the appropriate level of touch for potential regulations.
- Research and the workforce: AI is becoming a bigger part of everyday life. Thus, it will be necessary for the workforce to become familiar with the ins and outs of the technology. It’s in the interest of schools, universities, businesses, and the government to begin implementing programs aimed at educating the current and next generation of workers in how to use and apply AI across various fields. The White House concurrently released acompanion report focused on federally funded research and development in AI.
- Fairness, safety, and governance: While education will be key for preparing users of AI, it’s also important that this education provides an ethical foundation that safeguards against improper application of AI and explores security, privacy, and safety.
- Global considerations and security: While the US leads global efforts in developing AI technology, international engagement will be necessary to fully explore the many applications of AI across various industries. Governments will also need to work together to reach a standardized policy for the use of AI in things like warfare, cyber security, and sharing user data.
